Keeping it fresh
Store potatoes in a cool, dark, ventilated place. Keep onions dry and refrigerate carrots.
- Sort the box when it arrives.
- Keep potatoes dark and ventilated; store onions dry and separately. Whole butternut and sweet potatoes suit cool, dry conditions. Give each item space rather than keeping everything in the box.
- Give carrots their own chilled space.
- Remove leafy tops if present and put carrots in the fridge. Keep them separate from apples and ripening fruit, and avoid storing them in standing water.
- Prepare what your week needs.
- Rinse produce before use and keep cut portions covered in the fridge. Check the rest regularly, use older sound produce first and discard anything rotten. Plan a roast, soup or side around what you have.
Use clean running water before eating or preparing produce. Soap and household detergents are unsuitable. Keep produce and utensils separate from raw meat and seafood. Storage life depends on variety, ripeness, condition and temperature.
